Suicide Note--Janice Mirikitani

Suicide Note-Janice Mirikitani

Whom (or what) do you blame for teenage suicides such as the one the poem describes? How might such deaths be eliminated?

  1. I believe that the blame for teenage suicides is the peer pressure to fit in. Teenagers today feel that they have to fit in with the crowd, but they should understand that it is not a priority to be like someone else. If teens would not bully or pressure other teens to do what they do, I think that it will reduce, if not eliminate teenage suicides. Teens should realize that they can not please everyone, they can only do their best and if their best is not good enough for everyone else then that's the other person's problem.

  2. There are may different things that can be blamed for teenage suicides such as the one the poem describes. I feel acceptance and parents play the biggest role. A lot of teens today are so worried about being accepted. They change their wardrobe each day to wear what everyone else is wearing. They feel if they don't they will not be accepted by their peers. Also a lot of teens are trying to live up to their paarents standards. They feel as if they don't make the grades their parents would like them to they feel they aren't good enough. These deaths may be eliminated if teenagers go and talk to someone they can trust and realize they are not perfect. As Tequelia stated we can't please everyone. If teenagers would just accept who they are and not try to be like everyone else they will not feel so much pressure.

  3. In the poem I believe the blame for tennage suicide is that many teens have doubts about their self. About hhalf of the teenagers you see today are kind of commiting suicide basically, because no one don't have confidence, strive, or nothing going on for they self. as far as not communicating with people or making any friends. and I feel that mabye it would kind of eliminate some of teenage suicides that happens in the world.

  4. sometimes it could be that many teenagers today are sometimes fear what they parents may do. which is also another cause of suicide among teenagers mabye sometimes it's a point where a parent my push their chrildren to far such as making good grades and being strict on them sometimes. which can cause a teenager to commit suicide.

  5. I agree with David. I believe a lot of teenagers have doubts about themselves. They may feel as if they aren't happy with themselves and think suicide is the way to go.

  6. I believe some parents can be the blame for teenage suicides. Sometimes parents express their feelings about having a child of the opposite sex. Most teens desire to make their parents happy. Also, some teens prefer to be the opposite sex. Many believe he or she would excel if he or she was the opposite sex they may not be happy with themselves. This may result in teenage suicides.

  8. David,
I agree sometimes the pressure from parents can be unbearable. Grades are important to some parents. Especially if the student is college bound.

  9. I believe that a majority of the blame for teenage suicides come from the eagerness to fit in and to be accepted into society. Every teenager wants to feel like they fit in and that they have a place in society. I think the fear of being an outcast scaries many teenagers, and thats what leads them to suicidal thoughts. Some teenagers may fight to be socially accepted into society. A girl that may not be the pretties girl at school, study hard, and a little overweight, might feel the pressure to be the pretty girl on campus that all the guys like, and slim like a model. With the pressure of this type of girl in her head and not being able to fit in the way she wants to, she many then have the pressure to want to commit suicide. Teenagers need to become confident in who they are, and love themselves first before anyone else can love them. If they learn to accept themselves for who they are, they will see that others will too. Not everyone is going to like you and accept you and that is another thing teenagers need to realize.

  10. I would have to say that majority of teen suicides are because of pressure, doubt, and no self cofindence. They feel that no one will aprpreciate them if they don't reach higher expectations. Just the pressure alone of them trying to impress their parents can drive them crazy. The doubt of them not getting something right or failing can possibly drain a person. This can even lower their self confidence and esteem. Teen suicides have many other causes and effect that some of us still dont know about.

  11. I disagree with tequela. Her statement regarding the committing of suicide because of not being accepted into a certain group isnt really true. Maybe if the person was constantly being ridiculed by a group or just being mistreated then that may have a huge effect on the person. But maybe not to the point where they may commit suicide.

  12. AFTER READING THE SUICIDE NOTE IT'S PRETTY CLEAR AS TO WHO'S TO BLAME FOR THE YOUNG WOMAN'S DEATH. SHE SEEMED TO RESENT HER PARENTS, HER GPA, AND HER SEXUAL GENDER. BUT HER PARENTS WERE THE MAIN CAUSE OF HER DEATH. SHE FELT AS IF SHEWASNT GOOD ENOUGH, OR SHE WOULD NEVER AMOUNT TO WHAT THEY EXPECTED/WANTED OF HER. AS FAR AS TEENAGE SUICIDES IN GENERAL, IT'S SUCH A BROAD TOPIC. THERE ARE A LIST OF THINGS AN PEOPLE TO CHOOSE FROM AND TO BLAME.

  13. I blame the young girl’s parents for the cause of her death. The young girl felt as though her gender and grades in school was not pleasant in her parent’s eyes. She felt she was not the child they wanted her to be. In order to stop such deaths like Ms. Janice, there should be better support from parents. Parents shouldn't pressure there children so much to make them be better in life. The choices that are made by children should have guidance not torture.
